About the Healdsburg Avenue Bridge
The 89-year-old span across the Russian River was completed in December 1921. At that time, the crossing provided a vital link for commerce and trade between northern California and the San Francisco Bay area. Since the construction of U.S. 101, the bridge has served as an alternative route for local traffic and as an entry way into Healdsburg.
Healdsburg Veterans' Memorial Beach Park lies adjacent to the bridge and is a popular place for residents and visitors to enjoy recreational activities.
About the Healdsburg Avenue Bridge Project
Previous studies have indicated that the bridge is in need of attention and improvements. In early March 2010, the Healdsburg City Council initiated engineering and environmental studies to evaluate concepts to rehabilitate, replace, or relocate the bridge.
The bridge is almost 90 years old and does not meet current width or height requirements. In the past, concerns have been raised about the bridge's ability to withstand flood waters and seismic waves (earthquakes). It's the City's goal to consider all modes of transportation (vehicular, pedestrian and bicycles) over the river in order to determine the best way to serve the community's needs.
At the September 7, 2010 City Council meeting, the City selected Concept 2A as the locally preferred alternative. This Concept will rehabilitate the bridge in place and continue its use as a vehicular bridge. The City Council directed City Staff and the project consultant, Omni-Means, Ltd, to conduct in-depth environmental and engineering studies on the preferred alternative. For more information on the concepts considered by the City Council, go to the Concept Analysis Process page. For more information about the public involvement outreach efforts conducted during the initial stages of the project, please go to the Public Involvement page.
The City is dedicated to keeping the public informed about this process. Check back at this website for future project updates.
